and 3M's Infection Prevention Division
Sign Development Agreement
Princeton, New Jersey — October 10, 2010 — RST today announced a development agreement with 3M's Infection Prevention Division aimed at developing and marketing RST's PenelopeCS™ system. PenelopeCS™ automates the processing of surgical instruments in the central sterile processing department of hospitals or other health care facilities. The system is covered by the claims of the licensed patents and includes both hardware and software that will provide health care industry customers with a more robust technology platform for central sterile use. "PenelopeCS™ will become the standard of practice in central sterile processing departments around the world", according to Dr. Michael R. Treat, founder and chairman of RST, and a general surgeon with over twenty years of clinical experience at Columbia University. "We are fortunate to have 3M as an integrated partner who shares our vision to provide robotic services to the hospital marketplace," said Jack Kaplan, president of RST. "3M can provide the customer face and marketing knowledge to make PenelopeCS™ a success. In addition, 3M can further enable and expand this product platform through access to their broad technology base."
About the Central Sterile Processing Department
In order to maintain operating room efficiency on a daily basis, one area that often gets overlooked is the central sterile processing department. This department is where used/dirty surgical instruments are cleaned, sorted, inspected, repacked into containers, and sterilized for use in the next operation. This department has full responsibility for ensuring that equipment sets are delivered to the OR complete, sterile, and on time. This is a very complex manufacturing type process that is currently done manually.
PenelopeCS™ automates key aspects of the central sterile processing department.
The operating room is the major profit center of the hospital, but it depends on the central sterile processing department. PenelopeCS™ will reduce manpower bottlenecks in the central sterile processing department and reduce the cost of processing instrument sets. By drastically reducing instrument set packing errors, the system will also result in better clinical quality in the operating room.
